Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about Flag Tracker.

How do I add a partner?

Go to the Partners page and click "Add Partner". Enter an acronym (e.g., JD) to keep it private. You can start tracking events immediately.

What are flags?

Flags are behavioral indicators (red or green) based on psychology research. Red flags indicate concerning patterns, while green flags show healthy behaviors.

How do I track events?

On a partner's detail page, click "Add Event", select a flag, set the intensity (1-7), and add notes about what happened.

What is the 3-month timeline?

Research shows problematic patterns typically emerge within 3 months. The timeline helps you track behaviors during this critical period.

How do dealbreakers work?

You can mark specific flags as dealbreakers. When these occur, you'll see alerts and tracking to help you make informed decisions.

Can I compare partners?

Yes! The Compare feature lets you view multiple partners side-by-side to see patterns and differences.

Is Flag Tracker based on scientific research?

Yes. Flag Tracker's core principles are based on multiple scientific studies including John Gottman's decades of relationship dynamics research (the "Four Horsemen" that predict divorce), Rodriguez et al.'s 2021 study showing that written self-reflection reduces relationship conflict, Charlot et al. (2023) on warning signs predicting intimate partner violence, and Kural & Kovacs (2022) on attachment styles.

Why is tracking "red flags" important?

Research shows that certain behaviors statistically predict relationship deterioration or violence. Charlot et al. (2023) identified seven warning signs that strongly predicted later intimate partner violence. Gottman's research found that contempt is the single biggest predictor of divorce. Tracking patterns helps you recognize harmful cycles early.

How does journaling and data tracking help relationships?

Multiple studies confirm that journaling and self-monitoring improve relationship outcomes. Rodriguez et al. (2021) found that writing about conflicts from a neutral perspective significantly reduces disagreement and aggression. Neuroscience research shows that labeling emotions reduces amygdala activity and activates prefrontal cortex regions for emotional regulation.

What about green flags – is there science behind tracking positive behavior?

Absolutely. Gottman's research established the "Magic 5:1 ratio" - in happy relationships, there are approximately five positive interactions for every negative one. By tracking both red and green flags, Flag Tracker shows you the actual ratio of positive vs. negative behaviors.
